Statement of Need
During the COVID-19 pandemic healthcare providers and their patients with MS often had to make important clinical decisions regarding DMT therapy and risks of COVID-19 with little to no evidence to guide them. Over the course of the pandemic many researchers have designed studies and gathered data to address these questions and concerns. As a result, we have learned several valuable lessons pertinent to MS care. This includes knowledge about COVID-19 severity and infection risk, especially as it relates to DMT selection. We also have gained a much greater understanding of how MS DMTs affect SARS-CoV-2 vaccine responses and potentially to optimize vaccine responses. This program covers some of the major lessons learned during the COVID-19 pandemic about MS care, DMT safety and selection, vaccine responses, and telemedicine. This collaborative social learning platform establishes a network of providers who can support each other locally, as well as those from different communities, with the goal of learning and sharing best practices that will improve outcomes for patients with MS and COVID-19.
